A REPORT
|
|
Technology will play a significant role in healthcare industry
across the globe, more so in India where its still in
its nascent stage. CII MEDI Tech Summit 2009 on Leveraging
Technology For Transforming Standards of Care threw the light
on this where dignitaries from various walks of healthcare
industry graced the event.
Giving a brief insight on the occasion, Dr Laxman Prasad,
Advisor Technology Development Department of Science
& Technology, Government of India, said, Our case
is peculiar, in the sense, 26% population is below poverty
line and many dont get even the basic amenities of life.
With this scenario, we must move ahead together to enhance
the entire healthcare industry. For each rupee 1 spent by
the government, we propose the industry to spend 1.5 rupees
to develop and strengthen this line.
Echoing his sentiments, Sangita Reddy, Executive Director
Operations, Apollo Group of Hospitals, said, We
are determined to use this powerful medium and leverage technology
for effective healthcare. It is a subject which is being talked
about not only by the patients or the affected lot like their
relatives but it has also become a boardroom debate now. It
is the key to the future of our country. While Mr Anand
Rangachary, Managing Director, Frost & Sulivan
South Asia and Middle East seconded this opinion. Thinking
more in terms of targeting the mass instead of just the class,
he said, Innovation has to come in terms of technology
and its availability. Creating awareness in remotest areas
is another must.
Mr A Vaidheesh, Chairman CII MEDI Tech Summit 2009
& Managing Director Johnson & Johnson Medical, India
observed, Though India is catching up rapidly and has
been improving on the healthcare, countries like Japan and
China are way ahead in this. According to a report, healthcare
is a USD 35 billion industry in India and is expected to reach
over USD 75 billion by 2012 and USD 150 billion in another
five years after that. This means that currently it is at
around 5% of Indias GDP. Since technology is weaved-in
in everybodys daily life, leveraging and focusing it
to the healthcare industry has now become even more significant.
Conveying this thought Mr Vaidheesh expressed the purpose
of the summit with an ideal remark. If you follow the
normal way, its going to take a long time to reach the
desired level. However, the need today is for disruptive innovative
technologies to leap frog to the next level. Interplay of
various components in this system including complex financial
system attached to it and how will they play the significant
role in todays world, is the key to get there faster,
he said.
Looking at the bright future on how to leverage the technology
for transforming standards of care and replying to Dr Laxman
Prasads comments, Mr Vaidheesh rounded up the summit
on a high note saying, I welcome the governments
stand. It is very insightful. It is good to know that so much
work is being done by the Government of India in science and
technology and I welcome its move.
Post the dignitaries insightful information and views,
CEOs from various institutions came together for an interactive
roundtable to chart out a roadmap and how best this could
be implemented with the most efficient and effective way.
Apart from Mr Vaidheesh and Sangita Reddy, Mr Ajay Pitre,
Vice Chairman, CII Medical Equipment Division (MLED) and Managing
Director, Sushrut Surgicals Pvt. Ltd., Anjan Bose, Senior
Director & Business Head Philips Healthcare India,
Philips Electronics India Ltd., Anand Rangachary, Managing
Director, Frost & Sulivan South Asia and Middle
East, Dr Samuel Mathew Kalarickal, Director Cardiac
Catheterisation Laboratories, Apollo Hospital Enterprises
Ltd. and Dr Vikram Jit Singh Chhatwal, Chief Executive Officer,
Reliance Health Ventures Ltd. graced the brainstorming session.
All the panellists came to a conclusion: To reach up to the
grass-root level in rural areas with innovation in technology
and spread more awareness in local people to avail them of
the best possible medical care. Everybody unanimously agreed
that with changing times and updated technologies, it is a
must to chart out a course to zero-in on right medication
with the right technology and innovative machines.

Messe Düsseldorf Asias biennial medical showcase
for Thailand returns in 2009 as MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND which
will focus on regional medical and health care market.
Some 250 exhibiting companies from more than 20 countries
including national groups and pavilions from Austria, Belgium,
China, Germany, India, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and United
Kingdom will showcase the latest medical and health care innovations
to an expected turnout of 5,000 trade visitors and buyers,
according to a press release issued by the organizers.
Having drawn more than 10,000 visitors from nearly 60 countries
since its launch in 2003, the exhibitions objective
is to bring global and the most advanced medical care technologies,
products, solutions and services to Southeast Asias
medical and health care industry.
The impact of changing demographics, waning fertility rates
and a rapidly aging global population demands a need for improved
healthcare. The recent years have also seen an increase in
the number of public and private hospitals, a trend that will
further boost the medical equipment and supplies market by
30 percent to a value of approximately US$ 43 billion by 2010.
In the face of growing challenges, MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND
is an important opportunity for healthcare providers, medical
suppliers, industry professionals, government bodies, hospital
administrators, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals
to assess the healthcare situation.
To further ensure that all exhibiting companies and trade
visitors benefit from MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND, a Business Matching
Service is available. This specialised service allows trade
visitors to meet the suppliers that match their buying needs
before and during the exhibition. Exhibitors can also take
advantage of the Business Matching Service to meet target
customers and reach potential buyers, distributors and business
partners.
MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND 2009 is supported by the Ministry of
Public Health; Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau,
MEDICA, the global trade fair for out-patient and in-patient
care and REHACare International, a specialised trade fair
for those with special needs and requiring special care.
